Police
Currently there are three courses available for police officers. The rigging/rappelling course teaches skills that may be learned either before, or after, tactical assault rope training has been taken. It teaches operational level tactical rigging and rappelling skills. The second course deals with rescue/recovery, confined space skills and advanced rigging for tactical teams,. Each course is five days in length. The rigging and rappelling courses may be taught at your location, or in Calgary, Alberta. Classes are limited to between six and ten participants.
The third course that is applicable to police, fire and ems is a one day (second optional) accident scene safety course. It consists of seven modules that cover new car technology dealing with vehicle safety, design, restraints, alternative fuels, extrication, fires and highway safety. A second day of practical vehicle extrication techniques, also relating to new car technology, is optional. The second day can be adjusted to deal with basic manual techniques or advanced techniques using hydraulic tools. The one day class may be taught at any location and requires a minimum of twenty participants.

The course will deal with information that all tactical officers working on rope should have, but often do not. The class is appropriate for officers with or without prior experience. This course, along with the “Tactical Rescue Specialist” course, was developed to specifically target a gap in the high angle training of police officers. During the five days of instruction, we will cover techniques and equipment that will be new to many of the attendees. We will delve into basic to advanced rigging and find out how and why it works. We will logically investigate and dispense with some of the inaccurate dogma associated with rigging and rappelling, and learn to make sound choices based on fact. We will investigate options for retrieving personnel. Safety margins will be discussed pertaining to the equipment you are using and what you may consider in the future. Why are you using the gear that you are and what are your options, based on static, and potential dynamic loads? The course objective is to provide the attendees with legitimate information that they can use and pass on, to advance the skill levels and safety of their response teams. Considering the litigant nature of society today, it is necessary to take all reasonable precautions when training or responding to an incident.
Courses are conducted at the Calgary Fire Department training facility in northeast Calgary. The classrooms and towers, are indoors. However, the outdoor tower will also be used depending on weather and availability. Appropriate clothing for all weather is required. Clothing normally worn by officers during training sessions at their home base is recommended. All other equipment is supplied. Attendees are welcome to bring gear from their team’s equipment cache for discussion and experimentation.
I apologize to everyone for the short notice. The facilities in Calgary are not always easy to procure. The feasibility of running the courses will depend on filling the classes. Because of the time frame it will be greatly appreciated if your intent to attend is indicated as soon as possible. Courses that are not filled by January 23rd will be rescheduled. The courses require a minimum of eight participants, and a maximum of ten may be accommodated. All other pertinent information will be provided on request.
